The paper trail for this family indicates that they belong to family 9, but the DNA does not match. Descendants of Thomas's brother John match the other members of family 9, but descendants of two different sons of Thomas do not. It would appear that Thomas was not actually the son of David. The y-chromosome results suggest that Thomas was descended in the male line from a family named Foster and there were five Foster families listed on the same page as Catherine Cotten in the 1820 census in Abbeville Co., SC.
